The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) in Doha, Qatar, is set to present a landmark exhibition titled Splendours of the Atlas: A Voyage Through Morocco’s Heritage from November 2, 2024, to March 8, 2025. This exhibition, part of the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture, aims to explore the rich artistic traditions of Morocco through a comprehensive display of over 200 objects. These objects collectively narrate the complex history, vibrant society, and diverse artistic expressions of Morocco, illustrating how these elements continue to shape the nation’s culture today.
Splendours of the Atlas features items loaned from Moroccan institutions such as the National Foundation of Museums and the National Library of Rabat, which have never before been exhibited in Qatar. Additionally, previously unseen works from the collections of Qatar Museums, the Museum of Islamic Art, and the upcoming Lusail Museum will be on display. The exhibition is curated by Dr. Mounia Chekhab-Abudaya, MIA’s Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs.
Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Years of Culture and Qatar Museums, highlighted the significance of the exhibition: “We are extraordinarily fortunate to partner with institutions across Morocco for our Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture, which will greatly expand the ability of Qataris and those living in Qatar to gain insight into the grand Islamic traditions of our neighbor in North Africa. Our shared commitment to scholarship, scientific discovery, and artistic excellence has created a fertile basis for this year’s rich Year of Culture program.”
The exhibition is organized thematically into five sections:
1. Faces of Morocco: Landscapes and Society
This section showcases a mosaic of photographs by renowned photographers Bruno Barbey, Irving Penn, Lalla Essaydi, Mous Lamrabat, and Mounir Raji, offering visitors a visual exploration of Morocco’s diverse landscapes and societal dynamics.
2. The Soul of Morocco: Kings, Saints, and Scholars
Focusing on Moroccan dynastic history, this section delves into the country’s rich tradition of theological scholarship and scientific advancement, particularly in the historic cities of Fez and Marrakech.
3. Threads of Tradition: Morocco’s Artisanal Mastery
Highlighting the importance of crafts in Moroccan culture, this section features the nation’s expertise in leatherwork, textiles, carpets, ceramics, jewelry, and woodwork.
4. Traditional Sounds of Morocco
This section explores Morocco’s musical heritage, presenting instruments that produce a wide range of sounds, from the Andalusian melodies of the cities to the Gnawa music of the South.
5. Contemporary Moroccan Craftsmanship
The final section is a tribute to modern Moroccan artistry, showcasing seven commissioned works by artist Noureddine Amir. These pieces reinterpret traditional crafts, transforming them into new abstract works that will be displayed hanging from the gallery’s ceiling
