Salman Moghadasi’s “The End and Beginning” is a captivating four-by-two-meter artwork, a monolithic piece created using acrylic and natural colors on burlap. This audacious piece, inspired by the dots in the Arabic phrase “Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem” (بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم), explores the cyclical nature of beginnings and endings.
Moghadasi explains: “The dots of the word ‘Raheem’ are the termination of ‘Bismillah,’ although ‘Bismillah’ is regarded the beginning of every journey.” The painting itself features a powerful black line traversing the canvas, dividing yet connecting the space, reminiscent of a journey. Surrounding this central line are yellow brushstrokes, echoing traditional Islamic art’s golden border patterns, while small and large black dots add a sense of movement and balance. The interplay of orange-brick and yellow hues creates a visual equilibrium, prompting contemplation. Moghadasi’s work, considered one of his most daring, masterfully conveys profound ideas with minimalist visual elements.
“I constantly try to make sure that my art is relatable to all people, regardless of their culture or nationality,” Moghadasi states, highlighting his commitment to accessibility while retaining deep philosophical undertones.
